This project started as an idea after years of
reading the Sheepshead
Bay High School Alumni Web Page. Time and time again, I found
myself scrolling for familiar names but also noticing many happy
testimonials about growing up in Sheepshead Bay, and what a great
and fun place it was to live.
The constant theme of "what a great place to grow up,"
coupled with recent visits to a safe and reborn Sheepshead Bay,
brought a belief that perhaps there were people out there like myself
who might also want to have a quieter New York City visit, one that
removes us from traffic and bustle, high rise hotels and flagging
down taxis; to recreation, relaxation, and nearby quality seafood
restaurants.
A vacation that can have Sheepshead Bay as the base, in a clean
family-oriented hotel that serves as a gateway to the area as other
hotels do at national parks and great natural resources all over
this country. A place of lodging that can bring fisherman from all
over the country to sail away on its waters. A hotel with easy access
to the Sheepshead Bay Train Station, where a safe subway ride yields
all the treasures of New York City for just the cost of a token.
A hotel where in the summer, bathers can walk the wooden bridge
to Manhattan Beach.
I have written this in the hope that there are more people both
in Sheepshead Bay and cyberspace who would like to see a new, modern,
family-oriented hotel built in this neighborhood.
That Sheepshead Bay is a unique and beautiful natural resource
is a concept shared by many of us whove been fortunate to
travel other parts of the world, and have stood on distant shores.
Turning to history for objective answers that show a new hotel
would be both profitable and viable was an enjoyable task. The pages
of the past did not make me wait long for real examples of hotel
successes. History also shows massive customer bases from around
the United States have already flocked to such Sheepshead Bay establishments
as lived in the past.
The research has been fun. The problem is the deeper I probed,
the more that came to the surface. An area as rich in history can
go on and on with research. Indeed, the history of New York City
had filled up multiple Pulitzer Prize winners of over a thousand
pages each. There is much to Sheepshead Bay. It is my hope that
if I can communicate just a little of that excitement than one day
you will consider visiting these shores of southern Brooklyn.
Unlike magazine articles, web documents can be interactive through
e-mails. If anyone feels likewise about the hotel issue or has some
pictures or stories concerning the history of this area, your feedback
is most welcome.
Thank you,
Ira Leitner
